Gobble Gobble: Turkey Day at B+Co.

True confessions: we at Banowetz really love food. And we can tend to put our noses to the grindstone and forget to come up for air — or conversation — for days on end. So what better way to celebrate our love for food and force us to spend a little social time together than a Thanksgiving lunch? We decided to do it potluck style and let everyone bring a personal favorite. And despite some of the threats to bring stuff like “hot ham water,” we ended up with a really tasty spread. Here are the recipes for a few of our favorites, just in case you find yourself in need of a delish dish this holiday season. Enjoy! We sure did.

Meet the Newbie — Wes Phelan joins Team Banowetz

December 4, 2013 Kris Murphy

Banowetz is excited to bring designer and native Texan Wes Phelan on board. It took some time to find the right blend of talent and personality, but Wes was worth the wait. A graduate of UT Dallas, he’s been honing his skills the last few years at local creative shop Belmont Icehouse and working direct with Billy Jealousy. His work is not only strong graphically, but it’s smart too — something we’re also passionate about. We’re excited about what he brings to the table.

Wes’ talents are not limited to just design: he enjoys wildlife photography, singing and making music as well. He also likes to try new restaurants and loves coffee, so he’ll fit right in at the office (we love to eat and coffee’s a staple). Zoology is among his other interests, and we’ve been fairly warned that he’s an encyclopedia of random animal facts. Lastly, but not least, he’s an “aggressive” rollerblader. I’m not sure what that means but given he has two false teeth as a result, I suggest not getting in his way. He’s been skating for more than half his life and I assume by now he’s pretty good at it. (Having Fair Park across the street should come in handy.)

So, if you’re in the area, stop by and have a cup of joe with Wes and welcome him to the Team. Or if you’re feeling especially daring... bring some protective gear and your skates.

Pretty. Amazing. Inspiring work by Kevin Cantrell.

Last night as I hand-scrawled “Swim, Jacqueline, Swim” on a piece of poster board to take to a local swim meet, I couldn’t help but think about Kevin Cantrell’s meticulously beautiful letter forms and line work, and wonder how on earth he creates such perfection. It boggles my mind. No amount of ruling pens, straight edges or French curves could take me where he goes — especially without an “undo” button. Take a look at two of my favorite pieces of his work (Messina identity and Joyeux Noel Christmas scroll). You should also visit his site, where you can buy some of his prints (and even plates). I think I’m going to order the Christmas scroll. Who knows... maybe some of his genius will rub off. Either way, I want one.
