The Perot Museum: An Inside Outing

Leon Banowetz graciously treated the Team to a day at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, and to see the current exhibit of Animal Inside Out. If you aren’t familiar with the exhibit, it’s an absolutely amazing (albeit somewhat freaky, slightly disturbing) collection of skinned animals that have been filled with clear plastic. It’s a rare opportunity to see what lies beneath all the hair and fur up close and personal. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a full-sized giraffe towering over you, in a sense, naked. The process used (Plastination) and the attention to detail are remarkable. It certainly had us awed, despite the inevitable jokes and goofing off that occurs when you get the group of us together off the clock.

While waiting for our turn to see Animal Inside Out, we had to opportunity to explore the rest of the museum (or most of it), which was a first for some of us. Admittedly, it was even more impressive than I expected and it really warranted an entire day to completely take in all of the displays and factoids. An absolute favorite for several of us was the Lyda Hill Gems and Minerals Hall, where the sheer color, geometry and design of some of the various crystals as found in nature was breathtaking. And of course, riding the great big escalator in the glass tube was pretty cool, too. Something about science museums just brings out the kid in everyone — even if they’re kids with achy feet and backs.

After working up an appetite, we relocated to Savor, the gastropub at Klyde Warren Park, for drinks and appetizers where we enjoyed the view of downtown, deviled eggs and a few good laughs before calling it a night. All in all, it was a great outing. I am already looking forward to a return trip to the Perot Museum (this time in tennies), and I’d like to try the patio at Savor when the weather isn’t sub thirty. But it’s nice to live in a city that offers so many great options for a field trip, and to have co-workers that make taking a field trip so much fun.

Mercedes-Benz of Plano: A bold new look

Our client Mercedes-Benz of Plano approached us at the end of 2013 with the desire to revamp their advertising campaign for 2014 in a way that promoted their unrivaled customer service. They needed a solution that wasn’t overt or boastful, and was in keeping with the Mercedes-Benz brand standards. Thus, we came up with an attention-grabbing campaign that subtly, but effectively, juxtaposed attributes of their vehicles with the quality of their customer service and staff. We executed the campaign across a variety of media, using clever headlines and a high-contrast palette. Check out Mercedes-Benz of Plano’s bold new look for 2014.

We started this project by exploring print and outdoor executions that would communicate this comparison of quality quickly and effectively. Using large, clean type treatments in black on white, we were able to ensure readability on any media. Behind these type areas we multiplied bright, eye-catching, colors over vehicle images. This solution kept the messaging at the visual forefront, while maintaining vehicle recognition. We combined all of this with a memorable headline theme, and sincere copy that ends with an enticing call to action.

Then we took this motif, and produced spots for airing on network and cable television with powerful voiceovers and relatable imagery. The end result is a local dealership campaign unlike most you’ll ever see. It’s sophisticated, eye-catching, and something we’re all proud of. But, in the slightly edited words of LeVar Burton, you don’t have to take our word for it; take a look for yourself.

T45 Midtown Diner: A New Take on Classic Fare

February 5, 2014 DJ Sherman

We always strive to create engaging, quality work and pour ourselves into each challenge with which we are faced. Our clients recognize this and that's why it was no surprise when one of our long-time clients, Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, contacted us with the task of naming their new restaurant in Midtown, Manhattan.

On the street level of the Hyatt Times Square, you will find T45, a restaurant that puts a sophisticated, modern take on classic American fare. Mixing the energy of Broadway with an eclectic style, T45 creates a new dining experience that blends familiar retro elements with exciting modern touches.

We began with extensive research on the location, menu offerings and cultural influences of the restaurant. After narrowing our long list of carefully formulated names and taglines,"T45 Midtown Diner" was selected. The "T" symbolizes it's proximity to Times Square and the "45" represents it's location on 45th street.

Next, we crafted a logo that combined Broadway-inspired components with the restaurant's energetic and electric aesthetic. Finally, we began development of the menus, which delve deeper into the fusion of retro and modern. The design makes heavy use of overlaid illustrated elements from various eras as a nod to the eclectic nature of the restaurant itself.

Overall, the main thing we took away from this project is that working hard and having fun don't have to be mutually exclusive. Sometimes all you need is a bittersweet mixture of blood, sweat and (happy) tears to achieve success—to create something new yet instantly classic.
